There are two categories of membership: Member and Honorary Life Member. Admission to any category is at the discretion of the Council.
- Member: Membership of the Association is open to medical graduates, State Registered Clinical Scientists (or University Equivalent), HCPC Registered and trainee Biomedical Scientists (BMSs) (or equivalent in other fields), Healthcare workers or trainees employed in related fields (e.g. academic research, infection control, infectious diseases, dental medicine, veterinary medicine, food industry, water industry), those who practise or have practised (for retirees) Clinical Microbiology and who are employed in a health care role (such as by a diagnostic NHS laboratory) acceptable to the Council. Applicants will be asked to describe briefly when applying how they believe they fit the criteria.
- Honorary Life Member: Honorary Life Membership shall be awarded to persons ratified by council as deserving such merit e.g. SMA Past Presidents
Individuals must be (or have been) involved in a role that is (or was) relevant to clinical microbiology and is acceptable to the Council.
Membership fee:
The annual fee for Membership is £20 if paid by standing order. If another form of payment is used, the fee is £40.
Membership fees are due on 1st June each year.

Once membership has been approved by Council, the Membership secretary will email a standing order form for completion and for the applicant to return to their bank. Alternatively a standing order may be set up via internet banking. Currently, there is no membership number issued.
All members of the Association will be entitled to vote at the AGM or on other occasions when a vote is required.
